Clasamentul a fost realizat în baza analizei răspunsurilor a critici de film din întreaga lume, cu excepția Antarctidei. Unii scriu pentru magazine, alții pentru publicații online, academicieni și curatori de cinema, cu toții și-au prezentat lista. În clasament au fost incluse și filmele realizate în anul 2000, întrucât, acesta este un punct de reper în cinematografia mondială. Editorii speră că această listă va demonstra încă o dată că cinematografia nu moare, ea evoluează!
